The gerund form of the adjectives – The “Te” form

• For the adjectives ending in “i”, the gerund form is obtained by adding the –te ending at the adverbial form of the adjective

Ex:
たかい takai – たかくて takakute
ちいさいchiisai – ちいさくて chiisakute
さむいsamui –  さむくてsamukute



• For the adjectives ending in –na, the gerund form is obtained by changing the ending –na with –de

Ex:
しずかな shizukana – しずかでshizukade
きれいなkireina – きれいでkireide
げんきなgenkina – げんきでgenkide


• The “te” form of the adjectives is used to link two adjectives or two sentences, of which one ends with an adjective and the other with a verb

Ex:
Kore wa shizuka na resutoran desu. This is a calm restaurant.


Kore wa yasui na restuoran desu. This is a cheap restaurant.
これは しずかで やすい レストラン です 
  Kore wa shizukade yasui resutoran desu.
This is a calm and cheap restaurant.

Takashi san wa byoki deshita. Mr. Takashi is sick.
Takashi san wa gakko wo yasumimashita. Mr. Takashi missed school.
たかし さん は びょうきで がっこう を やすみました
Takashi san wa byokide gakko wo yasumimashita.
Mr. Takashi was sick and he missed school.
